SAFETY:

  • All riders must use a Snell or Ansi approved helmet.
  • All cyclists must provide their own bicycle.
  • Police will be present at the start, finish and at major intersections.
  • Though there will be course marshals, this is not a closed course. You must obey all rules of the road. Crossing the center line will be potential cause for disqualification.
  • If you plan on using aerobars, it is highly advised that you practice on this course before the race. Aerobars alter bicycle handling and do not typically have brake levers. This is particularly important on E Mercer, as the road has many sharp turns.
  • Branford Bike will have a tent near the start line and will provide minor wrenching, lubrication, and air for tires.

RULES:

  • A time trial is an individual race against the clock.
  • Please do not "warm up" on W Mercer Way, South of the start after the race has started at 8:30. Some alternatives are North from the start on W Mercer, or the I-90 trail across the bridge.
  • Obey all stop signs.
  • Starting times will be at equal intervals of 1 minute. No allowances will be made for mechanical or other mishaps.
  • The rider will be held by an official at the start but will be neither restrained nor pushed.
  • Please do not attempt to pass cars and obey all rules of the road while racing. Crossing the center line will be a cause for disqualification.
  • Drafting is not allowed, and is a possible basis for disqualification. You must not remain within 2 meters (6 feet) behind a rider and you must try to pass 1 m (3 feet) to the left side.
  • As E Mercer is a road with many sharp turns, it is important, if you are going to pass, that you do so safely. Warn the rider you are overtaking [stating "left" or "on your left" will suffice] and pass quickly.
  • The rider being passed should stay as far to the right of the road as practicable and safe. Passing on the right is prohibited.
  • Riders must be able to complete the course in under 1 hour.
  • Please do not "cool down" on E Mercer Way South of the finish. Some alternatives are N Mercer Way or the I-90 bicycle trail. Obey all stop signs and traffic lights.

PRIZES: Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category. Race organizers reserve the right to pool awards for younger age groups. Awards will be made to the top three finishers in the 50 and over age category, and the top three finishers in the under 50 age category. There will be separate awards for men and women. There will be a raffle for other prizes after completion of the race in the MSC parking lot.
