Second Annual Seniors for Juniors Golf Tournament

EVENT INFORMATION: You will want to be there when Seattle broadcasting legend Bruce King hosts the Second Annual Senior for Juniors Gold Tournament. This unique event, co-presented by Fir State Junior Golf Foundation and Seattle Parks and Recreation, raises funds for the Northwest Senior Games and the Fir State Junior Golf Foundation’s inner-city junior golf and scholarship programs.

It all happens at 8 a.m., Friday, August 22 when golfers tee it up for a Shotgun Start at scenic West Seattle Golf Course, which offers great challenge and spectacular views of the city and mountains. The tournament is a five-person scramble, with each team co-captained by a senior golfer (age 50 or better), and a junior golfer from the Fir State junior golf program The remaining team members may be any age.  Individual golfers are welcome to sign up and will be placed on a team.

There are great team and individual prizes to be awarded, plus a mini-team competition between the senior/junior co-captain pairs.  This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for seniors and juniors to enjoy and learn from each other in a truly fun environment.

An on-site barbeque follows tournament play, with special entertainment, surprise celebrities, and a live auction.

Fir State Junior Golf Foundation is the non-profit, charitable arm of the Fir State Golf Club, which was founded in 1947 to increase access to golf in the minority community.  The Foundation operates a free inner-city junior golf program which serves predominantly minority youngsters, and also provides tuition scholarships for college-bound junior golfers.

Seafair Half Marathon

SUNDAY: June 29th, 2008.......... 7:05 am

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW LONG IS THE HALF MARATHON?
The Seafair Half Marathon takes place at 7:05 am, Sunday, June 29, 2008.  It is 13.1 miles, which could take anywhere from 4 to 7 hours depending on your pace.

HOW DO I REGISTER?
Send the Sound Steps Seafair Half Marathon registration form in this booklet to Mari Becker at 8061 Densmore Avenue No., Seattle, WA 98103. We will send you the official Seafair form in the beginning of May, to return to us by June 1 with entrance fee of $40 (discounted). You can choose to pay using your own money, or take part in a group and individual fundraiser to raise your amount.

I’VE NEVER WALKED VERY FAR BEFORE. CAN I REALLY DO IT?
Yes! You can do it, as long as you follow the training plan that we provide for you. Talk to your doctor about any concerns before starting the training program. If you haven’t already been walking more than once a week, begin increasing so that you’re walking at 4 times a week.

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING INVOLVE?
Training includes walking 4 times per week – three shorter walks, plus one long walk. You are welcome to do the entire training on your own, but we also offer group walks especially for the longer walks. You can take breaks as you walk, but take your own training seriously. You want to be well prepared.

DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SCHEDULE EXACTLY?
No, but you should use it as an approximate guideline. You need to be walking 4 times per week, including one longer day. This will help you maintain your fitness level while increasing your endurance. But don’t let vacation or sick days stop you – just start up where you left off. We recommend taking a rest day the next after your long walk, but besides that just walk on whichever days work best for your schedule. If you already walk further than what is listed for the begging training days, just start following the program later on.

WHAT SUPPLIES WILL I NEED FOR THE TRAINING?
The most important thing is to have good fitting, supportive walking shoes. Bring water, a sunhat, and sunscreen, layered clothing and an umbrella if needed – this is Seattle after all! A pedometer can help you track your distance, but a watch will work as well.

REMEMBER: YOU CAN DO IT!!
For questions or to receive the training schedule, contact Mari Becker at 206.684.4664 or email sound.steps@seattle.gov

CONTACT: Mari Becker 206.684.4664 or sound.steps@seattle.gov
